Counselling for Burnout in Plymouth

Burnout does not always look dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • feeling emotionally exhausted all the time
  • struggling to switch off
  • feeling overwhelmed by small things
  • constantly pushing through despite being tired
  • losing patience more easily
  • feeling detached from yourself or other people
  • carrying on because you feel like you have to

A lot of people experiencing burnout are still functioning on the outside. They are working, parenting, organising, supporting other people and trying to hold everything together, often long after they have reached capacity.

Over time, that constant pressure can leave you feeling anxious, drained, emotionally overloaded or stuck in survival mode.

Counselling can offer space to slow down, understand what has led to this point and begin finding a way forward that feels more manageable and sustainable.

Signs of burnout can build gradually

Burnout often develops slowly over time.

Many people do not realise how overwhelmed they have become until even everyday tasks begin to feel difficult.

You might notice:

  • feeling emotionally numb or detached
  • constantly feeling tired, even after resting
  • struggling to focus or make decisions
  • feeling more anxious or irritable
  • becoming overwhelmed more easily
  • withdrawing from other people
  • feeling like you are always “behind”
  • relying on pressure or adrenaline to keep going
  • losing motivation for things you used to enjoy

Sometimes burnout is connected to work stress. Other times, it comes from carrying too much emotionally for too long, constantly meeting other people’s needs, or never fully allowing yourself to rest.

For many people, burnout is closely connected with anxiety, people-pleasing, masking or years of trying to cope quietly on their own.

How counselling can help with burnout

When you have been overwhelmed for a long time, it can become difficult to recognise what you actually need.

You may feel stuck in patterns of pushing through exhaustion, ignoring your limits, overthinking everything or constantly trying to stay on top of life despite feeling emotionally drained underneath.

Counselling offers space to pause.

Together, we can explore what has contributed to the burnout, what pressures you have been carrying, and what patterns may be keeping you stuck in survival mode.

Therapy is not about forcing yourself to become more productive or “better at coping”.

It can be a space to:

  • understand your emotional limits more clearly
  • recognise signs of overwhelm earlier
  • reduce self-criticism
  • explore boundaries and people-pleasing patterns
  • reconnect with your own needs
  • process difficult emotions safely
  • build a calmer and more sustainable way of living

Sessions move at your pace, without judgement or pressure to have everything figured out.

Sessions are £55 for 60 minutes.

You do not have to reach breaking point first

A lot of people wait until they feel completely exhausted before reaching out for support.

They keep going because they feel they should be coping better, because other people rely on them, or because they have become so used to carrying everything alone that burnout starts to feel normal.

But you do not have to wait until things completely fall apart before seeking support.

Counselling can help you slow things down before you reach crisis point, and create space to understand what has been happening underneath the exhaustion.

You are allowed to need rest, support and space, even if you are still functioning on the outside.
